Nepal Cultural Crafts Guide

Nepal has many fine handicrafts to offer to visitors: hand knotted woolen carpets, jewellery, pashmina shawls, woolen knitwears, embroidery, thangka paintings, mithila paintings, wood carvings, metal works, ceramics and pottery, rice paper and stationary.

Woodwork

Woodcraft is a specialty of Newar artisans in the Kathmandu Valley, offering travelers a variety of unique souvenirs. Popular items include wooden picture frames, windows, statues of deities, traditional figures, and modern carvings. Prices vary based on the type of wood, craftsmanship, and intricacy of the design. Skilled artisans can also create custom pieces to order using traditional tools and techniques passed down for centuries. These handcrafted wooden artworks make perfect keepsakes, reflecting Nepal’s rich artistic heritage.

Metalwork

The metal work is also exceptional. Statues of high quali-ty are available for prices ranging from a few thousand rupees to gold inlaid life sized works. The lost wax method is used to create these works of art. The wax figure is covered with clay and put in the sun to dry. Once ready, the wax is melted out and molten metal poured into the clay hollow. When the metal cools down and sets, the clay covering is destroyed and careful work with hammer, chisel and sanding material follows. The metal statue is then painted as per the specifications of religion or as per the request of the client.

Singing Bowls

Traditionally handcrafted from a blend of seven sacred metals, these bowls produce soothing vibrations and rich tones used for meditation, sound healing, and stress relief. Deeply rooted in Buddhist and Himalayan culture, Singing Bowls symbolize harmony and balance, making them popular among travelers seeking peace and mindfulness. Authentic, hand hammered bowls can be found in markets like Thamel, Patan, and Boudhanath, where artisans demonstrate their ancient craft.

Gurkha Khukuri

The Gurkha Khukuri is Nepal’s legendary curved knife, symbolizing bravery, tradition, and Nepali heritage. Handcrafted by skilled artisans, Khukuris feature high-carbon steel blades and handles made from buffalo horn, wood, or metal, often with intricate designs. Available as both functional knives and decorative pieces, they make perfect souvenirs for travelers seeking a meaningful keepsake. Visitors can purchase authentic, handcrafted Khukuris directly from local workshops, supporting Nepal’s traditional craftsmanship.

Carpets

Tibetan carpets are among the most elegant and valuable souvenirs to buy from Nepal. Handwoven by skilled artisans using high-quality wool, these carpets feature both traditional Tibetan patterns and modern designs, admired by collectors worldwide. Available in different knot counts for quality and texture, each rug reflects Nepal’s rich weaving heritage. Visitors can explore Thamel’s carpet shops or visit local manufacturers for custom made pieces.

Thangkas and Paubhas

For centuries, Thangka and Paubha scroll paintings have adorned monasteries, temples, and homes across East Asia, with Tibetan and Newar styles reflecting the peak of these rich artistic traditions. Historically, these paintings were created as offerings to deities, capturing both divine and earthly events such as earthquakes, harvests, snowfalls, and daily village life. The value of a Thangka or Paubha depends on the precision of each detail, the harmony of colors, and the geometric accuracy, which are believed to channel the life force of the depicted deities. Prices vary widely, from affordable tourist versions to intricately gold layered masterpieces. These vibrant, spiritual artworks make perfect souvenirs offering a tangible piece of the country’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Gems and Jewelry

Nepal is renowned for its stunning gemstones and handcrafted jewelry, created for centuries by skilled Newar goldsmiths and silversmiths. Travelers can shop for beautiful tourmalines in pink, peach, green, and rare lime-green, along with Lapis Lazuli, Aquamarine, Sapphire, Kyanite, Amethyst, and Turquoise. Expert artisans also craft exquisite gold and silver rings, necklaces, bracelets, and custom pieces, offering exceptional quality at affordable prices. Perfect as unique souvenirs or gifts, Nepali jewelry lets visitors take home a piece of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Pashmina and Woolen Products

Nepal is renowned for its high quality Pashmina and woolen products, prized for their softness, warmth, and exquisite craftsmanship. Pashmina shawls, scarves, and stoles are made from the fine undercoat of Himalayan goats, offering a lightweight yet luxurious feel with natural insulation. Each piece is hand-spun, hand woven, and sometimes hand embroidered, reflecting centuries old techniques passed down through generations. Travelers can find authentic products in Kathmandu, Thamel, and Bhaktapur markets, where artisans sell directly to customers.

Mithila Paintings

Mithila paintings, also known as Janakpur art, are colorful folk artworks created by women from southern Nepal. Once painted on village walls during festivals, they’re now made on handmade paper and canvas, blending tradition with modern creativity. Each piece showcases bright colors and symbolic patterns that celebrate Nepali culture and womanhood. Visitors can find these unique Mithila artworks in Janakpur and Kathmandu, making them one of the most meaningful souvenirs to buy in Nepal.

Handwoven Cloth

In the Kathmandu Valley and eastern Nepal, skilled artisans create handwoven cotton and Tussar silk fabrics in a variety of vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Tussar silk, known for its natural, subtle glow, is made from forest-dwelling silkworms in southern Nepal. Traditional block printing techniques, passed down through generations by the Newar and Rai communities, ensure each piece reflects genuine Nepali craftsmanship. These versatile fabrics make ideal souvenirs, whether for clothing, accessories, or home decor.

Paper Products

Traditional Nepalese paper, commonly called “rice paper,” is actually made from the bark of the lokta plant, found in remote regions of Nepal. Renowned for its durability and strength, lokta paper is even used by government offices for official documents. Beyond its practical uses, it has become a popular material for handcrafted souvenirs. Visitors to Thamel, Patan, and other markets can find beautifully made writing pads, journals, calendars, lampshades, and gift items crafted from lokta paper. These eco-friendly and artisanal products make perfect keepsakes that reflect Nepal’s traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Baskets

In Nepal’s Terai region, handcrafted grass and jute baskets are popular souvenirs for travelers seeking authentic Nepali crafts. Made in various shapes and sizes like the baji basket for serving rice and the dalcha basket for storage these eco friendly baskets combine functionality with traditional artistry. Nepal’s high quality jute, a major export, is skillfully woven into durable and decorative items, making them perfect keepsakes or gifts.

Practicalities

Visitors should be aware of government regulations before purchasing items to take out of Nepal. Antiques are strictly prohibited from being exported without proper authorization. Any antique items, such as Tibetan carpets, old Thangkas, or metal statues, must be inspected by the Department of Archaeology, and a certificate must be obtained before leaving the country. The Department is located in the National Archives Building on Ramshah Path, south of Singha Durbar. Following these rules ensures compliance and a hassle free shopping experience in Nepal.
