Trip Overview

Discover Buddhism at Kopan Monastery, and change your view on life and your fellow beings. Get in touch with an ancient tradition that has brought peace and happiness to numberless people throughout the centuries. Learn meditation techniques that will help you to be more calm and focused when engaged in your day to day activities. Meet new friends – people from all over the world come to these courses, and life long friendships have started here.

Introductory courses are scheduled throughout the year, ranging from the 10 day Discover Buddhism courses to more topic orientated short courses, which give you an deeper insight into one particular topic.

The Discover Buddhism courses give you an overview over Tibetan Buddhist principles and meditations in the form of the Lam Rim,  the complete path to Enlightenment.  They are offered as a ten-day or seven-day course. The ten day course includes a two day silent retreat, perfect to get experience in meditation in a supportive, conducive environment. Or choose the 7-day course which might suit your time frame better. Also offered are some 5-day courses for those who only have a short time available.

The 5, 7 or 10-day Discovering Buddhism courses are the first stepping stone towards attending intermediate and advanced course.

Buddhism : The Next Step is a program of intermediary courses that has been specifically designed to look at topics covered in the standard ten-day introductory courses in more detail. It is suitable for anyone who would like to deepen his/her understanding of the essential topics contained in the Buddha’s teachings and, in particular, in the teachings on the lam-rim, the stages of the path to enlightenment, as set out in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Each course of the series is designed as a stand-alone course – you are free to do however many of the courses interest you. You can also do them in whatever order you prefer. In this way you can return to Kopan year after year to deepen both your knowledge and practice of the Buddha’s teachings.

Generally three of the seven modules are taught each year. Each module lasts 7 – 10 days and includes daily sessions of teachings, meditations, and group discussion, as well as various evening activities such as mantra recitation, light offerings, sutra reading, etc.

Course Guidelines

The practice of meditation requires the development of spiritual discipline. To help you develop this kind of discipline, we have put together a set of guidelines.

To get the most benefit from the course, and to ensure that it is harmonious and enjoyable for all participants, we request you to follow these simple rules

  1. Attendance at all course sessions is mandatory. This includes meditation sessions and discussion group. If you cannot attend a session because of illness, please contact your group leader, or the course coordinator.

  2. Keep silence from 9 pm in the evening until you have finished your lunch. Breakfast and lunch are eaten in silence. This practice helps to focus one’s attention and to develop outer and inner awareness

  3. Be considerate of others’ silence: keep silence in the appropriate areas during residential courses, especially in the Gompa and the dormitories. No singing or playing music. In general it is recommended to maintain a quiet demeanor during the course. If you wish to keep silence throughout the course ask for a yellow ribbon in the reception.

  4. Stay inside the monastery grounds throughout the course.

  5. Please respect the monks and their vows. Do not distract them from their studies or work. Do not visit the monks in their room, or allow them to visit your room. Do not encourage the monks to break their monastic rules.

  6. Keep the five precepts. They are: no killing, stealing, lying, sexual activity, no tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs of any kind.

  7. Check your mobile (cell) phone and other electronic devices in the reception safe at the start of the course. This will help you stay focused on the teachings. If you use your mobile as alarm, then we request you to remove the sim card and store it in the reception.

  8. Do not bring any non-Dharma reading material, radio, or computer to your room, but store it in the safe in the reception. You can use an mp3 player for recording the teachings, but please do not play music.

  9. Men and women are accommodated in separate rooms. Please do not visit the rooms of the opposite sex. If you are attending as a couple, we suggest you sit separately in the meditation hall

  10. Your dress should be loose, simple, comfortable and appropriate for a monastic environment. Please adhere to our suggested dress code.

Refund Policy:

  • For 5-day courses: Refunds available for food only on the first day

  • For 7-day courses: Refunds available for food only on the first day

  • For 10-day courses: Partial refund available on the first two days

  • For the November Course: After the fourth day of the course, no refunds will be issued for accommodation or course fees; only meal costs can be refunded.

We thank you for your cooperation.

The Monastery reserves the rights to ask participants who do not attend all sessions, violate the rule regarding visiting monks’ rooms, or prove in other ways to be disturbing to the course, to leave the course.
